2021 Season

We  offer netball  for girls in Years 3 to 6 on Saturday mornings during Summer Term at
The University of Birmingham School, Weoley Park Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham B29 1QU.

Our first league match day on 1st May went well.  We welcomed a number of new players and fitted them into teams. A few places are still available for Years 4 to 6. New players will be placed in a team subject to vacancies and provided we have kit of the correct size. This means new players cannot expect to play in the same team as their friends.

Thank you to parents for respecting the Covid Rules and for social distancing.

The results of matches are now available below to download. We are having some problems generating the league table. We are using exactly the same algorithms as before, but for some reason it is not working this time round.

If you want to join the Little league, see below.

Little League matches are on Saturday mornings from 1st May. Round 1 will be 09:00 - 10:30; Round 2, 10:00 - 11:30  and  Rouind 3, 11:00 to 12:30, Each session consists of warm up, coaching and the match. Every team will play every other team once during the season.  Four teams will start at 9:00; two teams will start at 10:00 and four teams will start at 11:00.  Unless we have to postpone matches because of heavy rain, the last matches will be on 3rd July.  Fixture list to download.

Sessions are  outdoors and will be cancelled if there is heavy rain.

Our activities follow Government and England Netball guidance for reducing the risk of Covid transmission. This will mean some inconvenience for us all, but it will be worth it.

The differences this year are:

  • Pre-registration is essential. You cannot just turn up.
  • Registration involves:
    • completing an application form and a covid opt-in form
    • scanning or photographing the forms and sending them in .jpg, .png or .pdf format to our email address. The minimal acceptable resolution is 600 x 800 pixels. (1200 x 1600 is ideal.)
  • Then you can arrange a time for the first attendance.
  • The England Netball Covid mitigation rules state that there should be no spectators. Because our girls are all young, we will accept one parent / carer per family for child welfare purposes. Parents must observe social distancing.
  • Sadly there will be no Presentation Evening and Disco this year. We will give medals but not certificates at the end of the season.
  • The cost of joining the Little League is reduced to £10.00 for this year.
  • In addition there will be (as usual) a returnable deposit of £10.00 for kit.
  • The tuck shop will not be selling unwrapped sweets this year. Other drinks and snacks will be available.
  • Payment of £20.00 will be required by bank transfer. (Tle Little League has a separate bank account - please don't use the Club's bank account or your Club membership number!). The bank details are:

What is not to like?

Bournville & Selly Oak Little League is operated by Birmingham City Netball Club, a club with CAPS accreditation from England Netball. This accreditation provides an assurance that the organisation is well run and governed, with all necessary policies and procedures in place for Safeguarding of Children. The League is organised and run by an experienced teacher who holds a Level 2 Coaching qualification from England Netball and is a former County netball player. All our adult personnel have been subject to an Enhanced Disclosure Check (DBS). Our independent Safeguarding Officer is Mrs Rhiannon Plews.

Little League Netball has been established in Birmingham for well over twenty years and aims to provide the opportunity for local girls (school years 3, 4, 5 and 6) to play supervised netball at as low a cost as possible.  Our beautiful kit is loaned free on a small deposit. Girls of all abilities are welcome to take part, especially those who have not played netball before, as the aim of the Little League is to provide girls with safe, highly organised and supervised netball at little cost.

Since 2003 Bournville & Selly Oak Little League has been a recognised Little League under the auspices of Birmingham City Council Sports Development and follows the Fair Play Charter and (so far as is possible) the rules that were laid down for the running of Little Leagues. Our Little League has a number of teams named after British birds. The Little League is set up each year in the Spring Term, and plays in the Summer Term. The cost is £20.00 per year. Kit is loaned on a modest deposit. Our events are normally held on Saturday mornings. We use the Spring Term for welcoming new players and integrating them into teams. In the Summer Term we play league matches most Saturdays.

So far as possible the teams are managed, coached and umpired by senior players from Birmingham City Netball Club. Little League players are encouraged to join the Club: either as Juniors while they are still in Years 3 - 6, or as seniors when they leave the Little League as they enter Year 7.

End of Season 2019

Little League Group Photo 2019

The photo was taken at the Fun Day on 6th July, when we mixed the teams up just for fun, and got the parents and team managers to play as well.

The 2019 Results and League Table are available below

We had a lovely Presentation Evening on 13th July, with lots of yummy food kindly donated by the parents and a super Disco by Simon of Mirror Image Discos. The event was well attended by players, parents and officials.

All players received a certificate and a medal to mark their team's position in the League. Congratulations to Swifts for coming first! Kingfishers were second and Wagtails third.

We also have medals to the girl in each team who had the most votes as 'Girl of the Match' by the opposition teams.

Players had voted for the girl in their own team who had made the best contribution to the team this year. These girls received the Players' Player trophies.

Everyone has played well this season, and all have improved considerably. This is why we run the Little League – and of course so that everyone can have fun. Team Managers presented trophies to the Most Improved Player in their team.

We gave awards to the winners of the Shooting Competitions on the Fun Day. We have some excellent shooters in our Little League!

Finally we gave Leavers' Certificates to all the girls in Year 6, for whom this is their last year of Little League.

Final League Table 2019

Congratulations to theSwifts who have again won the league  this year! For those who did not do quite so well, remember that Little League is not primarily about winning, but about learning the game and developing skills. Everyone has progressed well this year. Some who in March had never played Netball before have now joined our linked Netball Club and will be playing Intermediate League with us.
