2022 Season

Second batch of Team Photos are on the web page (remaining ones to be taken on 2nd July).

We are now nearly at the end of our League Matches! Already after eight weeks we can see a massive improvement in the standard of netball. This is what Little League is all about - enjoyment of the game and personal and team development.

We have been very lucky with the weather so far. The first six match days had fine  weather. It rained (not too heavily) on 18th June and we played through. The girls can call themselves real netballers now, since they know that rain does not stop play (unless it is absolutely torrential and set in for the day). We are hoping that the weather will be a bit better than that for the reminder of the season. We have two more weeks of league matches. If we are able to get all the  matches played by 2nd July we will have a Tournament on the 9th.

We plan a Fun Day on 16th July, with special matches based on Year groups rather than LL teams. Parents and year 6s will play against a Team Managers' Team.  We usually also have shooting competitions for different year groups.

The season will conclude with a Presentation Evening and Disco on 16th July in the evening.  All Players will get one free Child ticket and one free Adult ticket. Because of the numbers expected, we do not think we will be able to offer additional tickets this time.  If you have not had an email about the Presentation Evening, please conact us.

You can register your interest in the Little League at any time by downloading an application form, filling it in and returning it to us.

What is not to like?

Bournville & Selly Oak Little League is operated by Birmingham City Netball Club, a club with CAPS accreditation from England Netball. This accreditation provides an assurance that the organisation is well run and governed, with all necessary policies and procedures in place for Safeguarding of Children. The League is organised and run by an experienced teacher who holds a Level 2 Coaching qualification from England Netball and is a former County netball player. All our adult personnel have been subject to an Enhanced Disclosure Check (DBS). Our independent Safeguarding Officer is Mrs Rhiannon Plews.

Little League Netball has been established in Birmingham for well over twenty years and aims to provide the opportunity for local girls (school years 3, 4, 5 and 6) to play supervised netball at as low a cost as possible.  Our beautiful kit is loaned free on a small deposit. Girls of all abilities are welcome to take part, especially those who have not played netball before, as the aim of the Little League is to take girls from zero knowledge of the game to a level of skill where they will be a credit to a school or club netball team. Though we say so ourselves, we are quite successful at this!

Since 2003 Bournville & Selly Oak Little League has been a recognised Little League under the auspices of Birmingham City Council Sports Development and follows the Fair Play Charter and (so far as is possible) the rules that were laid down for the running of Little Leagues. Our Little League has a number of teams named after British birds. The Little League is set up each year in the Spring Term, and plays in the Summer Term. The cost is £25.00 per year. Kit is loaned on a modest deposit. Our events are normally held on Saturday mornings. We use the Spring Term for welcoming new players and integrating them into teams. In the Summer Term we play league matches most Saturdays.

So far as possible the teams are managed, coached and umpired by senior players from Birmingham City Netball Club. Little League players are encouraged to join the Club: either as Juniors while they are still in Years 3 - 6, or as seniors when they leave the Little League as they enter Year 7.

Our pictures here will show our ten teams for 2021, with their team managers (click to enlarge). If teams are not complete in the photographs, it could be that we do not have permission to photograph certain players. Also, inevitably there are a few absences every week.

There is also a staff photo of the organisers, team managers and helpers.

2021 Season

All league matches have now been played. Congratulations to the Blackbirds who came top of the league table, with Kingfishers second and Wagtails third. Best team progress was made by Greenfinches who rose up six places to finish fourth. Best attacking team was Wagtails with 144 goals; best defending was Blackbirds with only 38 goals against them.

League table 2021

Everyone this year should be proud of the progress they have made. In the end this is what matters more than where you end up on the League Table. Some who in March had never played Netball before have now joined our linked Netball Club and will be playing Intermediate League with us.
